Helpful hints on your road to pain relief
Chronic pain is a physical and psychological challenge. Keep the following tips
in mind as you seek treatment for your pain:3
- ACCEPT SUPPORT FROM LOVED ONES.
You need and deserve all the help you can get.
- SEEK TREATMENT as early as
possible to avoid further problems.
- DO NOT ALLOW YOUR PAIN TO TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE.
Pain is a part of you, but it should not define who you are. Try not to let
past frustrations of failed treatments stand in your way; there are a wide range
of treatments available.
- KEEP A PAIN JOURNAL. The American Pain Foundation's Pain Notebook is an easy-to-use tool to help you maintain a record of your pain and communicate your experiences. It's very useful when discussing levels of pain, response to treatment, improvements in functioning and side effects with your health care provider. - SPEAK UP ABOUT YOUR PAIN and
how it's impacting your life.
- WRITE DOWN ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE
and take them with you to your appointments; it's easy to forget things, and you
may not have much time with your provider.
- BRING A RELATIVE OR FRIEND TO YOUR APPOINTMENTS
to provide any support you might need. They can also take notes and help you to
remember things that were said.
- KNOW HOW TO CONTACT A MEMBER OF YOUR HEALTHCARE TEAM if you have any questions or concerns after you have
been taking your medicine for a while.
- KNOW YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS.
Your healthcare provider should share information about your condition, pain and
possible treatment options, but you should also inform yourself.
